LAST UPDATED - 05 July 2010 A quick glance at some of the caves of Meghalaya, with short hikes and brief stories and history of Meghalaya. This trip is meant for the average person with an adventurous side. An introduction to Caving. There are also avenues within the trip for those who are more adventurous and fit to explore further. Fitness Level:
Medium to fit.
Experience: No Caving experience needed.Equipment: One should bring shorts, sandals, hiking shoes, daily clothing, personal needs, bedding – torchlight. All other equipment will be provided.Day 1: Pickup at Guwahati & proceed to Siju in the Garo Hills. Approximately a 7-hour drive. Stay - in Siju Village – Government Tourist Guest House. Dinner: Garo Meal at Guest House. Day 2: Breakfast at Guest House – early morning walk to Bird Sanctuary, here we will come across our first limestone formation that surrounds us like a large hallway on both sides – open on top. We can do some simple rock climbing to get some experience. Return to Guest House for Lunch and preparation for entrance into Siju Dobkhabol Cave: the third largest cave in the Indian subcontinent. Its Length is 4772 m. Ideal for all variety of fitness levels. The less fit can go in for approximately one hour. The more fit and adventurous can continue till the end. Most of the walking will be done in water on riverbed; some spots will be waist deep to chest deep. In the early part there is a large cavern where we will find thousands of Bats. Dinner: Guest House. Stay: Guest House. Day 3: Early morning entry into cave for those interested. Breakfast and then depart for Cherapunjee. Approximately a 10-hour drive through scenic countryside. Stay – Cherapunjee. Day 4: Early morning Breakfast. Then we will have two choices for the day. The group can separate. Choice 1: Exploration of Krem Mawmluh – just outside of Cherapunjee having five river passages. Length is 4503m. Also a very simple cave Krem Phyllut: this cave has a large section of fossil passages – two stream ways and three entrances – it is 1003 m. Choice 2: Day hiking trip around village area just outside of Cherapunjee. Scenic hike overlooking the plains of Bangladesh – down to a natural bridge made from the roots of a Banyan tree. Dinner in Cherapunjee. Stay Cherapunjee. Evening: Cultural Show Day 5: Breakfast – Early morning departure for Jaintia Hills on the way we go through Laitlynkot and Smit, two important villages to the Khasi people, where we will see a grouping of Khasi Monoliths and also see the Seat of the Khyriem Kingship with an old traditional Khasi House. Lunch: Picnic style. Arrive near Krem Sweep or Syndai, where we will set up a campsite. Dinner: around campfire. Stay – tents. Day 6: Breakfast at campsite. Full day of exploration and hiking in and around Krem Sweep. This cave is full of beautiful stalactites and stalagmites its length is 970 m. Dinner: at Campsite. Stay: Tents. Day 7: Breakfast at campsite. Depart for Guwahati via Shillong. We will stop at a Hotel for Lunch and Shower before onward journey to Guwahati and drop off. Price:
